Talk-25: The AzComm Multi-Mode Optical Sensor for Multi-Function Marine Autonomy
Dr. Richard M. Marino, Azimuth Communications
Successful Marine Autonomy requires reliable solutions to many challenges, such as autonomous sensing, data processing and interpretation, as well as multi-node coordination, communications, and concerted actions. Azimuth Communications is a startup company spun-off from MIT Lincoln Laboratory productizing advanced optical sensing technology that can simultaneously measure 2D intensity images, plus provide secure Very Low Probability of Detection or Intercept (VLPD/VLPI) multi-channel laser comm, plus high-resolution 3D Imaging either in underwater or above water environments. All three optical sensing modes are defined in the sensor system software and are achieved with one low-SWaP (Size, Weight, and Power) instrument. Relatively low SWaP requirements are achieved due to extreme optical detection efficiency (single photoelectron detection sensitivity) and efficient system architectures. AzComm is actively seeking partners to realize these novel, emerging, and enabling capabilities.
