Talk-30: Ultra Low Power Acoustic Communications for the Internet of Underwater Things

Jack Rademacher, Sayed Saad Afzal, Fadel Adib, MIT

Underwater backscatter is an emerging technology for ultra-low power underwater acoustic communications. Instead of generating acoustic signals, underwater backscatter works by reflecting or absorbing existing acoustic signals. This makes it more than 1 million times lower power than existing acoustic modems. In this talk, we will describe the fundamentals of underwater backscatter and its applications to marine robotics. Additionally, we will describe follow up work on long range and doppler-resilient backscatter, and localization methods for underwater backscatter.
