Talk-08: Integration of MOOS-IvP and BlueOS (DemoDay 2024)
Jeremy Wenger (MIT), Ray Turrisi (MIT), Zachary Serlin (MIT-LL), Michael Benjamin (MIT)
The Blue Robotics BlueBoat USV is a commercially available cost effective USV. Structurally, the vehicle consists of two rotomolded hulls secured by a foldable aluminum frame. Within each hull there is ample room for battery and payload storage as well as easy access to the electronics. The Blue Robotics BlueBoat has the infrastructure for up to 8 18ah 4s Lipo batteries, giving it the ability to continuously operate for upwards of 60 hours. Paired with a payload capacity of 15kg and a versatile design, the BlueBoat is the ideal development platform for most USV applications.
Beginning in Summer ‘24 members of the MIT Marine Autonomy Lab in conjunction with the MIT Lincoln Laboratory have worked to integrate MOOS-IvP with the BlueOS software stack via a publicly available BlueOS extension. They have also designed a payload interface kit that allows the easy deployment of a variety of sensors and packages. These efforts result in a widely accessible platform that can support robotics and marine research for the long term.
During the Demo Day on the Charles River, members of the Marine Autonomy Lab will demonstrate taking a BlueBoat out of the box and outfitting it for a MOOS-IvP deployment. During this deployment, the BlueBoat will seamlessly integrate with the existing Clearpath Robotics Heron USV platform and demonstrate multi-agent MOOS-IvP operations such as linear convoying and data acquisition via a sensor payload.
