Talk-06: Open Source DevSecOps for Marine Robots

In 2026, if all you have is some code in a Git repository it's unlikely to be particularly useful to your team or external collaborators. The multi-institutional collaboration "Open Ocean Software" focuses on creating ecosystems around existing marine open source projects. This effort has many facets: community building, governance, education, documentation and various "meta"-technical projects. Within this last topic (the focus of this talk) is the concept of DevSecOps: a continuous "factory" of tools that turn developer (Dev) code into operations (Ops) code with an emphasis on security (Sec) in all aspects of this factory.
Marine robot practitioners face some challenges that are shared by general purpose open source development (e.g., Github security, package repository security) and some that are unique (e.g., internet-disconnected, remote embedded systems with substantial power constraints). This talk will focus on actionable tools, strategies, and examples for implementing practical DevSecOps factories for autonomous underwater and surface vehicles. I will apply this to projects relevant to the MOOS-DAWG community, such as Goby, DCCL, and MOOS-IvP. Finally, I hope this will not be the end of this discussion, but just the start.
