Networking Overview

The IP subnet 192.168.1.xxx describes all devices on the lab network. This includes:

  • Vehicles on the water connecting via wifi
  • Computers on the dock and in the lab connecting via wifi
  • Computers in the lab connecting via ethernet

The core of the network is the Cisco wifi unit located near the door of the lab. The Cisco provides wifi for the lab at 802.11b/g (kayak-local-2ghz) and 802.11a (kayak-local-5ghz). The 5ghz network provides the most reliable connection for computers in the lab.

The Cisco unit also manages IP assignments for ethernet and wifi, for static and for dynamic assignments. All devices on the subnet have internet access through the Cisco router's WAN connection.

Wifi to the water is provided by a Bullet radio attached to a sector antenna. The antenna provides a wide angle of coverage at 802.11b/g.

Connecting From a Vehicle

  • Vehicles on the water should have a static IP address assigned at the Cisco router.
    • A unique IP address for the radio
    • A unique IP address for each computer onboard
  • Any standard 802.11b/g radio can be used in bridge mode
  • Best performance will be achieved with a Ubiquity brand of radio

Shorestation Computer

  • It is best for shorestation computers to have a fixed IP address.
  • If the computer is connected only for the day, it is OK to use a dynamically-assigned IP as it will remain constant (leased) for 24 hours.
