Talk-26: Making the Right (Starboard) Turn- Developing and Deploying COLREGs Behaviors

Alon Yaari, SARA Inc.

The need to deploy unmanned vessels in the littorals is increasing, raising the importance of successful approaches to autonomous adherence to international maritime laws of navigation (COLREGs). Through an ongoing SBIR program, SARA has demonstrated a behavior-based approach using MOOS and IvP Helm. The problem lends itself to a multi-objective solution, which IvP Helm excels at solving. This presentation concentrates on the mechanics of behavior development including the process of selecting behavior delineation, AOF versus ZAIC, and MOOS environment concerns for deploying multiple concurrent behaviors. Field and simulation test results are presented.
