Talk-26: The SubSeaSail Unmanned Sailing Vessel

Phil Freidhoff

Presenting for SubSeaSail Inc.

SubSeaSail, Inc. (SSS) is developing two lines of disruptively affordable, 100% energy harvesting (wind+solar), long-duration, ultra-low-signature Autonomous Undersea & Surface Vehicles (AUSVs) that are virtually invisible above water and able to listen/monitor down to 100 meters for extended periods. One is its lightweight (130 lbs) semi-submersible ISR vehicle called HORUS(tm) . The other AUSV is a fast trimaran HERMES(tm) for cargo/energy delivery to the beach that can also carry non-traditional loads. The ability to submerge to hide from bad actors/ bad weather and work in contested environments is a game changer. SubSeaSail is leveraging Caliburn's TempestOS and MIT's MOOS IvP Navigation autonomy proving out that interoperability between software and hardware is their path to turning a SubSeaSail vehicle into a platform capable of being configured for multiple missions.

The company's sustainable competitive advantage is based on a growing IP portfolio with 14 issued and 6 pending patents. SSS is partnered with Caliburn Technologies, which provides Tempest OS with cyber security and interoperability capabilities to SSS vehicles. Caliburn will represent SSS at MOOS-DAWG 2026.
