Talk-26: MOOS-IvP : Mobile Platform Autonomy Architecture in the Ocean Observatory Initiative

Arjuna Balasuriya, MIT, Laboratory for Autonomous Marine Sensing Systems (LAMSS), and Center for Ocean Engineering

Marine explorations and sampling is experiencing a paradigm shift from platform-centric to distributed networks of stationary nodes, mobile gliders and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). Ocean Observatory Initiative (OOI), sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF), has chosen the MOOS-IvP autonomy architecture as its candidate technology for marine mobile platforms. Preliminary at sea experiments were carried out in 2009 (OSSE 09) to demonstrate the capabilities of different components of the planning and prosecution architecture. This talk will present the proposed architecture and results from these preliminary at sea experiments using a fleet of AUVs and gliders.
