Talk-21: The Electric MOKAI

Joseph Curcio, Department of Mechanical Engineering, MIT

The MOKAI is a motorized kayak, commercially available from MOKAI Manufacturing in New York. The platform runs on a Subaru EX21, single cylinder engine. The gas engine can have some drawbacks in terms of noise and the need to ensure water doesn't enter the air intake openings. For certain applications of interest to MIT, an electric version may be preferable. An all-electric prototype has been under development since January 2017, and the results will be discussed here.
