The MIT Sailing Pavilion has served as a part time research lab for field testing autonomy algorithms and software since 2005 with the autonomous kayaks. Prior to 2005 the Pavilion was also the site for occasional UUV testing prior to major field exercises. MIT research in marine autonomy has benefitted enormously from the Sailing Pavilion and their willingness to tolerate the occasional invasion of robotic vehicles alongside the daily sailing lessons, practices and races.
